Dr. Byne is a clinician-scientist who has dedicated over 40 years to neurosciences research and over 30 years to sexual and gender minority clinical work, curriculum development, and patient advocacy.  His research has included a variety of approaches to the study of brain structure, function and sex differences in health and mental illness.  He was a member of the Consortium on the Management of Disorders of Sex Development and chaired the American Psychiatric Associations' Task Force on Treatment of Gender Identity Disorder and its Workgroup on Gender Dysphoria.  With Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers, in 2013 he founded the peer reviewed journal, LGBT Health, to facilitate the efforts of clinicians, academics, researchers, and policymakers in addressing the health needs of sexual and gender minorities, and he continues to serve as editor-in-chief.  He is currently a psychiatrist with the Office of Mental Health of New York State with a focus on addressing the needs of socially disenfranchised gender minority populations with mental illness.
