We dedicated fifty years to cutting-edge research at the intersection of gender, sexuality, and mental health.

We won’t stop now.

Here’s how you can help.

Since our early work on gender and sexual development of the late 70s—and the founding of one of the first HIV Centers in the United States in 1987—we have been at the forefront of the scientific discovery of essential topics about gender, sexuality, and mental health, an area historically ignored by the science establishment. Over five decades, we built a portfolio of innovative studies with support from the federal government and private foundations, opened the first clinic providing expert care to individuals and families across the gender and sexuality spectrum at ColumbiaDoctors, and trained generations of residents, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, early-stage investigators, professional staff, and community members.

Our core belief is that all people, regardless of their gender and sexual behavior, identity, and attraction, are entitled to the best mental health care and that the public deserves accurate facts informed by scientific evidence. In recent decades, we’ve witnessed an emerging interest in topics related to gender and sexuality, yet recent shifts in federal priorities now place some of our most promising, life-enhancing projects at risk.

We are not stopping.

We’re moving forward—and we’re inviting partners who share our commitment to join us.

People like you.

  2. An evidence-based, comprehensive training program on gender and sexuality for youth workers in mental health facilities.

  3. A study on how stress, social connectedness, and biology shape brain health and aging in sexual and gender minority adults by combining social support information with brain imaging.

  4. An accessible online platform that offers trustworthy, science-based information on gender, sexuality, and mental health and helps counter harmful misinformation.

  5. A project that brings patients, clinicians, and researchers to work on patient-centered care in mental healthcare for gender minority youth and their families.

And many more to come.
